Pumpkin Faces

Happy Halloween!

This year (and the last 2 years), I have worked Halloween. On the holidays I try to do something fun and different for groups. So yesterday we did a Halloween Zumba for movement. For Leisure Pursuits I had Halloween themed quizzes and a word search. For the Rec Therapy group we painted pumpkins. They turned out awesome!

We started the group talking about masks and how they are used as a disguise. I related it to how what we project to the world doesn’t always match what we are really feeling on the inside. I then instruct them to paint the pumpkin with one side showing how the world sees them/what they project to the world and the other side is how they are really feeling on the inside.

The general consensus is that they project to the world they are fine, a ray of sunshine, a spitball/fireball, and carefree. On the inside they are feeling unhappy, alone, isolated, and unsure of how to ask for help.

We processed their paintings and talked about ways to express our feelings. In my opinion, we are a combination of our “masks”. We need to find a balance so we don’t get lost within ourselves.
